Verkehrsausgaben were notgeld issues that were actually intended to go into circulation.

Collectors will come across many small notgeld pieces that are sometimes in a very 'used' condition. These will almost certainly be from the category verkehrsausgaben. It does beg the question though, why some serienscheine pieces are found in very well used condition too, if these types weren't actually issued for circulation reasons?? Anyway, verkehrsausgaben notes were issued to meet the shortage of coinage and most have very small values.....10pf, 20pf,50pf etc. etc.....similar to coins of 10p, 20p & 50p.

There are 2 verkehrsausgaben coloured catalogues by Mehl which can assist the notgeld collector to distinguish and catalogue the pieces. If you can't find the pieces in the serienscheine catalogues, have a look in the verkehrsausgaben ones! Some of these pieces were issued in 'sets' and may appear to the average collector, to be a series issue. It takes time and a little experience to see the differences. Most 'verk' pieces will be dated between 1917- 1920. They do tend to be less colourful, but come in a whole range of designs and colours.

The note below was issued in Neustadt and is dated 1.Dez.1918. It shows Father Christmas with some toys. A beautifully detailed and colourful note, that to the untrained collector could appear to be serienscheine. The big give away though is the date.
